Salt of the Earth

Have you ever thought about where your bath products come from? Not just where they come from, but what’s in them and how they are made? Did you know that Epsom salts (or magnesium sulfates if you’re feeling fancy) are completely chemical free? Epsom salts are natural minerals that people have been using for generations. Unlike other bath products, Epsom salts are naturally occurring and chemical free, so you can relax knowing you’re being kind to your body and to the environment.

What do I use Epsom salt for?

Cool, so we’ve established Epsom salts are eco-friendly and chemical free, but what is Epsom salt even used for? Great question! Epsom salt can be used for a bunch of different things, even as a sleep aid! Most people use Epsom salt to help them relax and unwind. Soaking in Epsom salt can relieve muscle tension, soothe joint pain, reduce swelling and you guessed it, relieve stress! Soaking has also been beneficial relieving pain related to sunburns, poison oak and irritation. So next time you’ve had a hard workout (or maybe just a hard day), try an Epsom salt soak!

How do I use Epsom salt for soaking?

So you’ve found an Epsom salt you like (if you haven’t, check out our salt range), now what? Preparing an Epsom salt soak is so easy, you’ll wonder why you aren’t doing it right now.

  1. Run a bath.

  2. While the bath is running, mix 250 grams (or a generous pour) of Epsom salt into the bath water.

  3. Relax and destress. Soak for around 15 mins.

What else can I use Epsom salt for?

While our Epsom salt range is designed exclusively for relaxful soaking, Epsom salts can be used for a bunch of different things. The pain relieving  properties mean it can be used to soothe sunburns, poison ivy and other irritations. Some people even use food grade Epsom salt to create a detoxifying drink (strong possibility this will have a laxative effect.)  Hope you like salt!

Bonus for the history buffs: The discovery of Epsom salt

Epsom salt was first discovered in the year 1618 by a local cow herder in Epsom Common, England. Henry Wicker’s cows refused to drink the bitter water, despite the presence of a drought. Although they did not drink, Wicker’s Cows waded through the water, soaking their legs in the salty liquid. Wicker noticed the cuts and injuries on the legs of the cows who had soaked in the water seemed to heal quicker than usual. The news of the healing properties of the Epsom salts spread quickly, effectively transforming the area of Epsom into a destination for relaxation and relief from medical ailments. Fortunately for us, we no longer need to travel to Epsom to experience the benefits of these healing salts. The simple addition of Epsom salt to your normal bathing routine can offer all of the benefits you’d get from a soak in Epsom common!
